My Ideal of Yungu Education

1

 Yungu Education and Yungu School

Yungu Education develops its own education philosophy and methodologies based on the most developed ones in the 21st century; Yungu School is where its philosophy being implemented and realized .

China and even the whole world are now facing enormous educational challenges. I hold, even though I am not an educational expert, that there are things to be improved in traditional education. I firmly believe we can do better. But how? Let’s brainstorm together. Yungu School is a pilot scheme in education innovation, looking for unique education approaches.

In student recruitment, we accept families who shares the same education concepts with Yungu and would like to collaborate with us in cultivating students. Since parents decide many things crucial to the growth of their children before the age of 18, we are going to explore a way that both school and parents can work hand-in-hand in education. But we do not screen students. Because the success of a school based only on carefully selected students is irreproducible. Moreover, children’s education is not something could be experimented.

Yungu is a school for all. Exclusive school is only for certain type of students. Its practice and experience is not applicable to the other kinds of schools, to the whole community and the nation. Yungu is not an exclusive school. It is my dream to form an educational system of our own, which will be a scientific achievement some day. The mature concept of Yungu education can be finally promoted in both urban and rural areas of our country or probably other countries. I believe that one day rural schools can do what we do now.

Yungu team is a public-spirited entrepreneur team like Alibaba 19 years ago. It represents our philosophy of education, and the way Yungu adopts is what we believe in. It bears our dream. Therefore, I will invest plenty of time in Yungu education.

  Yungu Teachers

What truly makes a good teacher?

When we were kids, we often ran away at the sight of teachers and felt afraid of school headmaster. But children now are quite different. I don’t think it’s a change of children; instead, our teachers have changed. Only when teachers advance, can the children make progress.

However, there are not as many as excellent teachers who both love education and are skilled at teaching in China. So many teachers are knowledgeable but are not good at passing on knowledge. School is not a machine to impart skills, so not all people who excel in math or reading can be good math or Chinese teachers. It makes no sense if a teacher never grows, makes innovation or deliberates on teaching approaches.

We are expected to have more exchanges on education methods with internationally well-known schools and to welcome more foreign teachers to join us. Where to go and what to hear is of great importance to our teachers, so we should enrich our brains and experience as much as possible.

In addition to passion and love for children andeducation, it is the unique teaching approach that also matters.

We are teachers only when we are teaching; but our love for the students is not different from their parents in any way. Children can feel both kindness and malice in our eyes.

Loving to be a teacher is not the same thing as being a professional teacher. Love is what somehow makes you persistent. I hope every teacher in Yungu comes here out of their passion to study on how to protect and develop distinctions in every person using ways of their own.

I was a teacher myself and love to be a teacher. Teachers’ excellent qualities will light up children’s whole life. There is nothing more satisfying for teachers than witnessing their students’ truly becoming somebody. If you are a good teacher, your students will remember you and appreciate you for their whole life, which will give you the greatest sense of accomplishment.

  Yungu Children

Nothing can take precedence over children. It is estimated to be 18 million to 20 million newborns in China each year. They are the most important resource, asset and wealth of China. We must make investment in education, since it determines the future strength of our country and is also the hope of our country.

Different teaching methods should be employed for different children

Not every child can become Hua Luogeng, the renown mathematician, and not every child wants to be Hua Luogeng. In fact, there are no two identical children in a class. Some students may be excellent in reading, some not; some naughty and some quiet. They have also different habits. It is all of these factors that make the class colorful. How do we appreciate children different from others? At first, you should know that even if a child is weak in some aspect, he may do well in other ones, e.g. singing, sports. You are required to discover his talents. An excellent student knows he may get lower scores than other students in math exam, but he is convinced that he can go far on other roads.

Many people take me as their model, but I’m certainly not everyone’s model. I paid a lot to embark on my road. However, it is not a matter of how much you pay, but a matter involving various factors. So, I am not intended to urge all kids here to succeed or encourage them to be a superstar, but I do will let them know that it's not easy to do something insignificant well. Besides, they should also be told that every road is tortuous and needs a mindset of peace, competition and cooperation and the courage to face challenges and to embrace the future, and that it is not easy to take a road.

Education is to open people’s mind

The previous teaching approach is like that no matter it is cedar wood or pine, all will be sent to saw mill and cut into identical planks. What is the optimum teaching approach most suitable for the future? – It is to open other people’s mind. What a teacher should do is to help the child open the door of interest and ask them to courageously enter the door, while a bad teacher closes the door.

What’s the standard for children in Yungu? They must be sunny and confident. Our children dare to express themselves on any occasions in a natural and poised way. Such expression indicates not the superiority that they are better than others, but confidence. They are all bold thinkers, embracing new and different ideas. They are also storytellers, charming and funny. But, they are not wild kids.

I don’t expect kids in Yungu to be an exam machine, but I believe they will never be anything less in exams. Our children will not resist study, only will do better, because our basic work is sufficient and teaching approaches are correct. Children nurtured in this way will be on the right track in university. Time will tell.

In the evaluation of Yungu children, which standard do we choose, formative or summative? My answer is both of them. Yungu will not assess children based on a single transcript during the education process, but in a complete and all-round way.

If the evaluation is only result-oriented, Yunguis just a school; if process also considered, it can be called education.

Respect every child’s ideas and dreams

It is China’s culture to respect the old and love the young, but I suggest it on the contrary. We are expected to not only love children or young persons, but also respect their ideas and opinions. As for the old, I think love is more significant.

I hope Yungu truly treats each child as a man. We are required to respect the children and lead them to pursue knowledge and devote to what they love. The best state of children is that they study hard every day, but feel very happy despite some pressure, because the pressure comes from their own thirst for knowledge, not from exam or our requirements. They can learn a lot from every class like a sponge absorbing much water and would like to have a further study on what they are interested in, since there is too much to learn in their opinions and they feel that is a labor of love.

Children may keep changing their dreams during this process, yet we should respect such changes and help them continue exploring and knowing themselves.

 Expectations for Yungu Kindergarten,

Primary School, Middle School and High School

Yungu education focuses on “people” at every stage by giving in principal priority to balanced development and paying special attention to comprehensive quality in kindergarten, primary school and middle school. Every student should keep balance both in ability and quality. So, as a teacher, you shall tell them all these skills are necessary.

In kindergarten, emphasis is laid on cultivation of children’s interests, such as music, dancing, exercise. As what you see and hear, we call it exercise not sports, because I am against the idea of participating in sports competition like a machine. I hope every kid here loves and knows how to exercise instead of running prizes.

When in primary school, priority is given to formation of values. During this stage, students are taught how to conduct themselves. It also explores how to make children love reading and erase the differences between the east and the west in their mind by allowing them to be exposed to classic tales from the whole world. Some people may ask whether eastern culture or western culture is better. If you ask me, I may say it is the one combining both of them.
